Team Liccy - in Celebration of Life!
Welcome to my Team Liccy Samaritans 5k Walk/Run fundraising homepage! This will be my 2nd year participating (walking) in celebration of the life I saved. For those of you who know me, you already know this story and how close it is to my heart. For those of you who don't, here is a little background info:
Back in 2010 I helped stop a young girl named Lisa (Liccy) Glowna from killing herself. Our friendship developed on Tumblr back in 2009, where we both had soccer blogs and regularly talked to each other. Then in 2010, she disappeared for about a week online, when one of her best friends reached out to us asking us to help Liccy, that she was trying to kill herself and was very depressed. She had been suffering thru a lot both at home and school, through a broken home with an abusive mother and older sister, then going to school where she was being constantly bullied and felt like an outcast. For her, there was no safe haven, neither home nor school, to help deal with her pain, no one she could confide in and talk to about her pain, so I did my best to be there for her. She had been my online friend for over a year and I wanted her to know that someone did care for her. I reached out to her, and when she got back to me, she said that my message gave her hope, got rid of her despair and it made her not want to die anymore. It no longer felt like she was at the bottom of the barrel with no glimmer of hope or light, and that life can get better again for her - all she needed was a support system, someone to talk to, and I made sure that I stayed active in her life. Once she graduated from school, she was able to move to a better environment, a new university where she could foster healthier friendships, and now, six years later, you would never know that this happy, and smiling face once knew so much darkness and pain.
So I'm running for Liccy, in celebration of her life. Depression can occur in anyone, and there are varying degrees of this terrible disease. But unless someone has a positive support system of family and friends to reach out to, someone to talk to and help carry their hand, it can lead to unfortunate consequences. Suicide shouldn't be a stigma, people shouldn't feel that they are alone in their pain. There will always be someone to show them that they are cared for, that it isn't the end of the road. And that is where Samaritans comes in. Through this non-profit organization's crisis services, people just like you and me are offering a listening ear and a caring heart to help provide mental health support, prevention and intervention.
You can help me prevent suicide by clicking the Donate Now button to sponsor my efforts in meeting my fundraising goal, or click Join This Team to join me on Sat, Sept 23rd and run for TEAM LICCY in celebration of her life. Whichever one you do, let's help create awareness about the deadly disease of depression and raise awareness for this organization's amazing cause!
Thank you so much for your support :)
